Well, my plan was to be regularly blogging about our move and travel experiences. So much for that. I will say that while we were on our first excursion out of Tucson, we had very unreliable internet service. But that is still no excuse for the loonnngggg absence!
Here is part one of a series about our first trip. We journeyed to Flagstaff Arizona and found our first dispersed camping site. It was near a lake called Marshall Pond Lake. Technically it has the potential to be a lake but I do believe it has been many years since it has reached lake status.
On our way up, we were followed by one of the creepiest monsoon storms I have seen in a long time. We raced ahead of it but ended up pulling off the interstate because of the wind and the scary looking funnel type clouds that were developing before our eyes.
Here is another. Can you see those wispy little lines streaking downwards from the clouds?
We were in Flag towards the end of June. The mornings and evening were beautiful but it was pretty toasty in the sun from 2:00-ish – 6:00-ish. I did not get a pic of our campsite. Dunno what I was thinking. So, the evening I took pics of a herd of cattle that came through our camp as we ate dinner outside will have to suffice.
They were a little shy at first but grew braver when they realized we were just going to stupidly take pictures of them. The white calf in the next pic was fascinated by the wicket from our croquet set and kept bumping his nose against it.
Of course, they mooed from time to time and we were delighted to hear occasional metallic notes of a cow bell.
Okay. Enough cow pics. (City folks. Sheesh.)
The kids and Chad (and I from time to time) played croquet daily, multiple times. Croquet in the mountains is a Bailey family tradition started by, well, I don’t know. But I know for sure Chad’s family used to play croquet in the mountains on camping trips when he was a kid so since we have been married we have tried to keep up the tradition.
We took a trip to the Lava Tubes one day. Let me just tell you that I was amazed, amazed, when we approached the hole in the ground that was the entrance to the Lava Tubes and were blasted in the middle of the hot forest by freezing cold air. It was like 90 degrees hiking to the tubes. Then your senses are shocked as if someone had opened the freezer door. All from a hole in the ground. Who knew?
The above sign says the cave was discovered in 1915, it is about a mile long and the temperature is between 32 and 40 degrees and that occasionally bats, squirrels and porcupines take shelter in the cave. Bats? Cool!!! And by the way, it is not at all discouraging or disconcerting to have to sign a log with such information as how many people are in your party, who to contact in case of an emergency, what kind of vehicle you drive and the time you enter the cave and so on. And you have to sign out too.
CJ and Chad were all over checking out the cave. CJ is sporting the headlamp Jack and Sam gave him for his bday. You really need warmer clothes if you are going to hike the whole thing. And let me tell you, it is dark down there! Kaity was not so keen on hiking in a pitch dark freezing cave where bats may live. Needless to say the ladies stayed above ground while the boys explored. She did agree to go in a little ways for a photo op. Can you see me?
Next is a pic Chad took of CJ inside the tunnel, beyond where we could see them. Chad said there were some pretty cavernous areas in the tunnel.
There were also some not-so-cavernous areas.
There were quite a few visitors at the Lava Tubes. As we were entering, there were a couple of dudes(we’ll call them Frodo and Sam Wise because I didn’t get there names) who’d just finished the entire hike. They were friendly and shared how exactly a year before Sam Wise was in a terrible motorcycle accident and was in the hospital for months and broke everything and has had a ton of rehab. They were celebrating his life after the one year anniversary by taking on the Lava Tubes. We sure enjoyed our conversation with them! Wherever you are Sam Wise and Frodo, I hope you are prospering and feeling well!
We also had a picnic.
Later that day, we drove to Williams Arizona to have a look-see and were beckoned to Dairy Queen. Hi honey! He loves it when I take his picture! His treat? A Strawberry Cheesecake Blizzard.
Here is Beebs. Cookie Dough Blizzard with extra cookie dough.
Ceej loves Dairy Queen’s Arctic Rushes. I believe this one is lime.
You might be wondering why this image is so small. Well, I am wondering the same thing. On top of that, I can remember everything my family ordered at Dairy Queen that day but I haven’t a clue what I ordered.
There is an interesting shop in Williams. It is a beef jerky shop. In front of the beef jerky shop is a cut out of two aliens (very fitting when you think of beef jerky. Nothing says ‘Stop at my beef jerky shop for some fresh beef jerky’ like a great big peace sign throwing alien.) CJ wanted us to take this pic for Aunt Amy. She loves these alien guys!
Everyday we were there, CJ’s feet would be the dirtiest I have ever seen them. Not even by the end of the day but often by the beginning of the day they would be just filthy. So bad he wasn’t allowed on the carpet in the 5th wheel. I would have to fill a tub with water and pre-wash his feet outside with a foot/nail brush before I could bathe him inside. The child is Pig-Pen, I kid you not. Anyway, below is a pic of Kaity doing the honors.
So that’s it for the first installment. Thanks for reading through!
